In the world of photography, few artists embody the fusion of technical skill, passion, and creative diversity like Jay. As a dedicated healthcare professional, Jay’s journey behind the lens is not only a testament to his resilience but also to the healing power of art. From capturing candid childhood moments to exploring the mesmerizing landscapes of Japan, Jay has harnessed photography as a way to balance the demands of his profession with his artistic spirit. His work, driven by a love for people, places, and personal growth, brings out the beauty in life’s moments, and his journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Can you share your journey into photography and what sparked your passion for this art form?

I have been drawn to a camera from a very young age, and going through childhood photos always invoked a sense of happiness, joy, and nostalgia. Fast-forward now: As a healthcare worker, I deal with suffering and morbidity daily. Photography helps me capture the happiness and the cheerful part of life. This journey, from a young enthusiast to a professional healthcare worker using photography as a tool for positivity, is a testament to the transformative power of this art form.

How would you describe your signature style, and what themes do you find yourself most drawn to?

I cannot say if I have a signature style, as I love diversity. This openness to diverse styles and themes is what keeps my creative journey exciting and inclusive. I enjoy being inspired by the immense stream of inspiration via social apps, the internet, and printed material. I like to keep my style open to creativity as I explore deeper into the world of fashion. I enjoy shooting with continuous lights.

Your work is often celebrated for its distinctiveness. How do you keep your creative vision fresh and innovative?

Thank you. I enjoy collaborating with a diverse group of models and photographers. These collaborations are not just about taking photos, but about learning from each other. I learn from models and other photographers, educate myself from mistakes, and embrace a growth mindset. I am not afraid to experiment with different techniques and challenge myself to think outside the box for fresh and new ideas.

How has your approach to photography evolved over the years, and what major influences have shaped it?

Over the last two decades, I have photographed friends, kids, and families. Later, I moved to shoot nature and birds. I soon realized this was not my niche. In 2023, I attended a photography camp in Las Vegas, a transformative experience where I was introduced to model photography by one of my mentors. The 2024 Imaging USA conference, a significant event in my photography career, further elevated my interest in model photography. I was delighted to use multiple high-end cameras and lighting gear with mood-enhancing backdrops. Subsequently, my photography tour to Japan in early 2024 sealed my focus on model and fashion photography. Since returning from Japan, I have worked closely with local photographers in Michigan and continue to learn various styles and approaches.

What role does fashion play in your photography, and how do you integrate it into your storytelling?

I love fashion and would like to grow as a creative in the fashion industry. Fashion allows me to bring out the best expressions, poses, and happiness in a model. I often bring fashion accessories and props to shoots and instantly see the model's face light up with amusement. Additionally, I love to shoot in sequences, which allows me to capture fleeting expressions. In my opinion, the model, their overall emotional status, the surroundings, props, accessories, lighting, and last but not least, the photographer and his gear are integral to visual storytelling.

Could you walk us through your creative process from concept to final image? Do you have any rituals or routines that help bring your ideas to life?

Yes, I strongly believe in preparation and communication. Once a concept is finalized, I scout for models and locations that complement each other. I browse the Internet and Pinterest for inspirational pictures. Then, I communicate my ideas and plans with the model before the shoot. On the day of the shoot, we try to do our best to bring my concept to life. I am not afraid to take several shots to get the perfect shot!

What do you find most challenging about photographing fashion or portrait subjects, and how do you overcome these challenges?

The most difficult aspect of photographing fashion and portraits is capturing the model's personality and expressions while ensuring the natural elements, composition, lighting, background, and poses are flawless. I often take extra time to develop a rapport with the subject, and I notice that my second or later sessions with the models are far superior compared to my initial shoot. I usually start by letting the model pose, make subtle suggestions when required, and try to adapt to their style. Every model brings a new perspective to fashion, and I love to keep my portfolio diverse.

Can you share a particular project that was transformative for you or one that you feel most proud of?

I can never forget the 2024 Japan tour. From the jaw-dropping views of the majestic Mt. Fuji to the busy, colorful streets of Tokyo, to the serene Bamboo forest in Kyoto, to the marvelous Osaka Castle, and to the temples and shrines, I enjoyed every bit of my photo tour and could not ask for more diversity. This tour was the perfect impetus to take my skills to a different level. It was indeed a truly transformative journey.

What advice would you give aspiring photographers who want to break into the art and fashion industry?

Aspiring photographers should have a solid technical foundation. Continue to network with creatives, actively seek collaboration with renowned photographers, and keep abreast of lighting techniques and post-processing skills. Work towards building an appealing portfolio, and ultimately, do not give up. Keep trying.

Where do you see the future of photography heading, especially within fashion and art? Do you see any emerging trends or shifts in perspective?

I firmly believe technological advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality will likely transform the fashion and art industry, providing more immersive, interactive, and real-life experiences. The shift towards cinematic-style storytelling with high-resolution imagery and visual and audio effects will soon dominate the industry. Social apps have already played a significant role in bringing the global creative community on a common platform.

Jay’s journey is a vivid reminder that photography is more than just capturing images; it’s about preserving joy, exploring diversity, and connecting with people in profound ways. As he pushes creative boundaries and embraces technological advancements, Jay remains grounded in his desire to capture life’s beauty. His dedication to evolving his skills and style while uplifting others speaks volumes about his vision as an artist. For aspiring photographers and seasoned professionals alike, Jay’s story encourages a relentless pursuit of growth, collaboration, and above all, a commitment to seeing and sharing the light in the world.
