Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Sonya Upadhyay, a remarkable individual who began her modeling and pageantry career at the age of 42. Despite starting later than most, Sonya's journey is a testament to the power of following one's dreams and breaking stereotypes. From her initial foray into state pageants to her current reign as Ms. India Continental Worldwide 2024, Sonya has used her platform to inspire others and advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the beauty world. Let's dive into her experiences, challenges, and the wisdom she has gained along the way.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in modeling and pageantry, and how did you get started?

I started my modeling and pageantry career quite late in life, five years ago at the age of 42 when I happened to compete in a state pageant. I loved the glitz and glamour, but more than anything, I loved the idea of inspiring others to follow their dreams and engaging with platforms that have made a difference in my life and others'.

2. Can you share your experience and journey to becoming Ms. Connecticut?

I was Ms. Connecticut Continental Worldwide 2023, and currently, I am reigning as Ms. India Continental Worldwide 2024. I will be competing in the international pageant in Utah in July. The journey has been very fulfilling, full of experiences and opportunities. I feel very blessed to be following my own dreams while also inspiring and encouraging others to believe that it’s never too late to do what you have always wanted to do in life.

3. How do you balance your modeling career with the responsibilities that come with being a titleholder?

I try to balance my primary profession as a dentist with my passion for modeling. I use modeling to showcase and advance my platform as a titleholder, which is "Diversity and Inclusivity in the beauty world."

4. What challenges have you faced in the modeling and pageantry industries, and how have you overcome them?

I am trying to break stereotypes every day and in every opportunity. I work hard to promote myself even though I don’t fit the standards of a “typical model.” I am comfortable being “me” despite my age, ethnicity, height, and body type. I take rejections as stepping stones to success and always remind myself to “never give up.”

5. How do you stay motivated and maintain a positive attitude in such a competitive field?

My mantra is to always stay focused and not let challenges and rejections bring me down. I keep a positive mindset, reflect on my journey, cherish my successes, and surround myself with encouraging and positive people. My kids are my biggest cheerleaders.

6. Can you share some beauty or fashion tips that you swear by?

I focus on holistic health, which includes regular workouts to keep my body healthy, meditation and self-care to keep my mind on track, positive thoughts, staying hydrated, and always creating my own unique fashion style rather than following trends.

7. What advice would you give to aspiring models and pageant contestants looking to follow in your footsteps?

My advice would be to be "UNIQUELY YOU" and never try to fit into any standards.

8. What are your future goals and aspirations, both within and beyond the world of modeling and pageantry?

I would like to challenge myself and push myself further by working with more varied designers, engaging with organizations that make a difference, and continuously working towards my platforms, whether I am a titleholder or not.

Sonya Upadhyay's story is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to pursue your passions and make a difference. Her journey from dentist to titleholder, her ability to balance multiple roles, and her dedication to breaking stereotypes in the modeling industry are truly inspiring. As Sonya prepares for the international pageant in Utah, her commitment to her platform and her vision for a more inclusive beauty world continue to shine. We thank Sonya for sharing her insights and experiences, and we look forward to seeing the incredible impact she will undoubtedly continue to make in the years to come.
